National Aquathlon Championships, 2012

We'll be hosting this national event, which will be the selection race for the NZ team to compete in the World Championships during the week prior to the World Triathlon Championships in Auckland, October 2012. Summer Sprint Triathlon Three

A return to the tried and tested Rabbit Island course on Sunday January 29. Race starts at 10am. Modified course, but otherwise all good to go. Details and entries, click here

Summer Sprint Race Three, January 29

With parts of Rabbit Island still out of commission it was a challenge to plan a new course on race day. The new transition area worked better than the old on for both spectators and competitors, close to the beach and with good visibility all round. The bike course was a couple of kilometres too long, but we can adjust that prior to race four on February 19. Results, click here

It was a big weekend for Nelson with around 50 people taking part in either the Tri NZ Contact race on the Friday night, or either the Ironman-distance Challenge Wanaka or the Lake Wanaka Half on Saturday. Brilliant race by Britta Martin, whose bike ride nearly set her up for a win in the long race. Unheralded in pre-race hype, Britta came through for second in the pro field. Other top results, Carol Cooper's second in F40-49 in the long race, and in the half, Eileen Searle's win in F50-54, Robin Reid's second in M35-39 (5th overall), Susie Wood's second in F35-39 and Mandy Stephens' second in F40-44.

Philip Wareing Memorial Multisport Triathlon 2012

Wild weather wreaked havoc with the swim and kayak courses, forcing their cancellation and the whole race was run as either a short or long duathlon.

After the challenge of Auckland, many chose to sit this one out, but they missed a great race in a beautiful location in perfect conditions. The water was crisp, clear and flat, the bike ride, as always was varied and challenging, as was the run (maybe too much so). Jon Linyard was first man on the triathlon, Jasmine Walker the first woman. David Ayre and Naomi Whitehead dominated the kayak event. In the longer duathlon, Charlie Squance and Kiri Williams came out on top. In the short races, it was Bailey Ford and Vicki Bryson in the duathlon and Gabbi Courtenay and Digby Kynaston in the triathlon. Results, click here

2012 Auckland World Champs qualifying race

Great racing from Nelson triathletes, with 16 club members gaining selection for next year. With further qualifying races in both distances over the same, there could be more. Read about the Auckland race here

Summer Sprint Triathlon, race one, November 6

After the initial shock of 13 degree water temp, everyone had a good time in perfect conditions.
The Dutch team gave their first demo, with Sarissa de Vries winning and Maaike Caelers third. Representing Nelson males, NIgel Burgess came in second, with Alex Grigg in astonishingly good form for fourth followed by Susie Wood. Results, click here

Masters Games and October Madness Sea Swim, Thursday October 20, 6pm

In between the bad weather we've had and the bad weather that's coming, we had a perfect night for the swim. the water has warmed up a bit to 16 degrees, which was a slight shock, but not too bad when you got going. The outgoing tide made for a bit of a crush going around the first buoy, but after that things seemed to go well. 86 starters, 84 finishers and everyone had a good time.

Spring Duathlon Series Race Three and Masters Games Duathlon, Sunday October 16

Last night's rain left its mark with big puddles around the course and in the transition area. The long race came down to a battle between Jon Linyard, competing in the Masters race and Danial Bremner, competing in the club race, with Jon sneaking home by 12 seconds. Eloise Fry was unstoppable in the women's race, finishing ahead of the very competitive 45+ trio of Andrea Livingston, Maria Voigt and Carolyn Squance.

Small turnout, but good day's racing. Most approved of the new run course, which will be used for race three and for the Masters Games race, which will be run together on Sunday October 16.

Spring Duathlon Series, Race One, Sunday August 28

Jon Linyard and Nathan Fa'avae start the final run

NIce day, dry course, friendly race, who could ask for more. Nathan Fa'avae and Jon Linyard took the first two spots after catching early run leader Kim Hogarth. Nettie Stow had a seriously quick bike ride to be first woman, ahead of Soozie Trice.


Scott and Darrin Barr

Scott Barr and father Darrin raced together to finish a second apart at the head of the short race ahead of Steve Pauling.

  Maria Voigt

Maria Voigt and Michelle Schurman were in the next two spots. Stephen Neill, Patrica Black and Kathleen Hofman finished in that order in the walk section.
